What can Uganda copy from China’s housing programes? Quite a lot i must say. Thirty years ago, china had almost the same housing and settlement problem as Africa and the Caribbean. Scattered buildings everywhere and anywhere, most of them looking horrible. The communist government came up with a plan to shift people from rural areas and build communal modern homes. This program had immense benefits to the people but also to government. first, it freed the land for massive mechanized agriculture, secondly it was easy to provide services in consolidated settlements. Amenities like water and electricity were all provided to the new settlement that were planned prior. When I last visited China, I was not only impressed, I was mesmerized. Copying and implementing this in Uganda is very possible. we just have to put our heads together.
