The death of cities! Cities are like human beings. They have life and can live and die. Though the mortality rate of cities is quite low compared to human beings, all the same they can die if they do not reinvent themselves. Some become stunted and fail to grow. Cities take long to die but when they do, they become ghostly and a shadow of their former selves.
There two major towns that have regressed or stagnated in Uganda and these are Mbizzinnya on Kampala- Masaka Road and Bombo town which used to be a thriving urban area during Idi Amin regime. If you are an investor you have to be calculative so as not to invest in a dying city. A thriving city starts business and a good city is a vibrant city. The first resiurce if a city are its people. Its not just people but quality people. People that have good skills yo transform the city. The higher the quality of people in a city the more thriving that city will become. Every city has a genesis of how it was established. Some started as industrial areas while others were trading centers. Sometimes tides change and the city starts to decline. To avoid this decline, cities must always reinvent themselves. Nothing makes a city more thriving than having the key drivers which are high quality social services like universities, hospitals, and industries. These help keep the city going. Cities die because the leaders are not far sighted enough to chart the path and rally the people towards their goal.
